Overview
The Shire is the definition of a “heavy draft horse”. Historically used to pull canal barges and brewery wagons, today it is a symbol of strength and tradition. Despite its intimidating size, it is known as a gentle giant.
Origin & History
Descends from the medieval English “Great Horse”. It was fundamental in Britain’s agricultural and industrial revolution. After mechanization, numbers fell drastically, but today it is bred for passion and exhibition.
Temperament & Personality
- Docility: Extremely calm. It is rare to see a nervous Shire.
- Willingness: They have a great desire to please and work as a team.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: Huge. Some exceed 2 meters at the withers.
- Feathers: Leg feathers are long and silky (usually white).
- Colors: Black, brown, grey, or bay, often with large white markings.
Foal Stage

Shire foals grow at a breakneck speed.
- Nutrition: Critical. Do not overfeed so bones grow at the correct rate to support future weight.
- Handling: Teaching discipline is vital because in a few months they will have the strength of a small adult.
Adult Stage

- Strength: Capable of moving multi-ton loads.
- Movement: Despite their weight, they have a high, elegant action at the trot.
Health & Care
- Myoglobinuria: Prone to muscle issues if worked hard after rest days on high diet (Monday morning disease).
- Skin: Leg feathers require extra hygiene to avoid “mud fever” or mites.
Needs & Routines
- Shoeing: Require special custom-made horseshoes, much larger and more expensive.
- Food: They eat industrial quantities of hay.
