Summary
Contrasting with the European giants, the Russian Heavy Draft is a “compact truck.” It was designed to plow heavy soils, pull carts, and, surprisingly, produce milk (kumis). Its gait is more active and faster than other heavy breeds.
Origin and History
The breed was officially formed in Soviet times (around 1952), by crossing local breeds (Russian Ardenner) with Percherons and Brabants. The goal was to create an efficient biological tractor that consumed little and worked hard.
Temperament and Personality
- Energy: Unlike the more phlegmatic Ardenner, the Russian is quite active and moves with agility.
- Human: Raised in close contact with farmers, it is usually very friendly and dependent on human company.
Physical Characteristics
- Height: 14.1-15.1 hands. It is short for a heavy draft horse.
- Body: Extremely deep and wide. Short legs but with dense bone.
- Head: Straight and kind profile.
- Coat: Often chestnut or roan, with thick manes but not excessive feathering on the legs.
Foal Stage

They are notable for their exceptional growth rate.
- Development: They reach almost their adult size (in height) very quickly, allowing them to be put to work earlier than other breeds (though caution must be exercised).
- Milk: Mares are excellent mothers with high milk production.
Adult Stage

- Efficiency: Has an incredible strength-to-weight ratio. Can pull loads exceeding its own weight several times over.
- Adaptability: Withstands harsh winters with little supplemental feed.
Health and Care
- Longevity: They live many years and work until advanced ages.
- Weight: Prone to obesity if they don’t work enough.
Needs and Routines
- Work: Need exercise. They do not handle prolonged confinement well.
- Social: Like to live in groups.
