Overview
The Haflinger is unmistakable thanks to its golden color and white or flaxen mane. Bred in the Tyrolean mountains, it is extremely sure-footed and hardy. It is an “all-rounder” horse suitable for riding, driving, or working.
Origin & History
Originating from the Southern Tyrolean mountains (Austria and Italy). Their ancestors were robust medieval mountain horses. The modern breed was founded with the introduction of Arabian blood in the 19th century, adding refinement.
Temperament & Personality
- Character: Known for being very friendly and people-oriented.
- Intelligence: They are smart, sometimes “too” smart, and can open gates or seek food if bored.
- Safety: Very calm, hard to spook.
Physical Characteristics
- Color: Always chestnut (from light gold to dark liver) with flaxen or white mane and tail.
- Build: Compact, strong, and muscular, yet elegant.
- Head: Expressive, with large eyes and small ears.

- Metabolism: They are “easy keepers” (get fat on air). Diet must be monitored closely to avoid laminitis.
- Feet: Very hard and healthy hooves, often can go barefoot on suitable terrain.

- Diet: Little grain/feed. Diet should be based on controlled forage.
- Living: Prefer living in a herd and outdoors rather than in a stable.
