Overview

Sometimes called “the horse of Ariège”, the Castillonnais is very similar to the Mérens but with reddish marks (“nez de renard” or fox nose). It is a versatile horse, ideal for mountain trail riding due to its sure-footedness.

Origin & History

Originating from the Biros valley in the Pyrenees. Traditionally used for mining and agriculture in difficult terrain. The breed nearly disappeared but was saved in the 1980s.

  • Calm: They have a very stable temperament, ideal for beginner riders.
  • Willingness: Tireless workers in terrain where other horses wouldn’t go.

  • Color: Black or very dark bay, with fire (reddish) marks on the flanks and muzzle.
  • Body: Compact, broad back, and short but very strong legs.
