Overview
Sometimes called “the horse of Ariège”, the Castillonnais is very similar to the Mérens but with reddish marks (“nez de renard” or fox nose). It is a versatile horse, ideal for mountain trail riding due to its sure-footedness.
Origin & History
Originating from the Biros valley in the Pyrenees. Traditionally used for mining and agriculture in difficult terrain. The breed nearly disappeared but was saved in the 1980s.
Temperament & Personality
- Calm: They have a very stable temperament, ideal for beginner riders.
- Willingness: Tireless workers in terrain where other horses wouldn’t go.
Physical Characteristics
- Color: Black or very dark bay, with fire (reddish) marks on the flanks and muzzle.
- Body: Compact, broad back, and short but very strong legs.

Born dark and robust.
- Rearing: Often raised in semi-liberty in the mountains (transhumance).

- Uses: Driving, leisure riding, and light agricultural work.
- Adaptability: Survive harsh winters outdoors.

- Feet: Excellent hooves, rarely need shoeing if the terrain isn’t too abrasive.
- Diet: Utilize poor pastures very well.
