Overview
The Rottweiler is one of the oldest herding and guard breeds. Often misunderstood, it is a calm and confident dog that does not make friends immediately with everyone but is extremely loyal to its family.
Origin & History
Descended from dogs that accompanied Roman legions across the Alps, protecting humans and driving cattle. Its name comes from the town of Rottweil, Germany, where they established themselves as “butcher’s dogs” (Rottweiler Metzgerhund) to pull carts with meat and guard money.
Temperament & Personality
A serious dog for responsible owners.
- Protective: Natural guarding instinct.
- Loyal: forms a very strong bond with its owner.
- Worker: Needs mental tasks. Happiest when it has a job to do.
Physical Characteristics
Powerful and muscular.
- Body: Robust and athletic, inspiring strength.
- Head: Broad and strong.
- Coat: Black with well-defined tan markings.
Puppy Stage

Puppies grow fast and can be clumsy.
- Socialization: CRITICAL. Must be exposed to all kinds of people, dogs, and noises from a very young age to ensure a balanced adult.
- Leadership: Needs a firm (but fair) owner from day one.
Adult Stage

- Exercise: Daily walks and play sessions. Not a marathon runner, but needs activity.
- Weight: Controlling diet is vital to avoid joint problems.
Health & Care
- Hips: Hip dysplasia is very common.
- Heart: Aortic stenosis.
- Cancer: Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) has some incidence.
Needs & Routines
- Training: Must be continuous throughout its life.
- Family: Despite their tough appearance, they want to be indoors with the family, not forgotten in the yard.
