Irish Wolfhound

Overview

“Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked”. This ancient saying defines the Wolfhound (though they are rarely provoked today). Despite their imposing size, they are among the most peaceful dogs, excellent with children and other dogs.

Origin & History

An ancient breed used by the Celts for war and hunting elk and wolves. Nearly went extinct in the 19th century but was revived by Captain George Graham.

Temperament & Personality

• Sweetness: Extremely affectionate and sensitive.
• Calmness: Spend much of the day sleeping.
• Guardian: Their size intimidates, but they are poor guard dogs because they are too friendly.

Physical Characteristics

• Height: Imposing. Standing on hind legs, they easily tower over a human.
• Coat: Rough and wiry, typical of sighthounds, for protection against brush and weather.

Puppy Stage

They grow incredibly fast.

• Exercise: Must be very limited and controlled. No jumping or forced running to protect growing bones.
• Food: Need high-quality nutrition in precise amounts.

Adult Stage

• Space: Need room to stretch out, though they are “rugs” indoors.
• Lifespan: Unfortunately short.

Health & Care

• Heart: Dilated cardiomyopathy is common.
• Gastric Torsion: High risk. Must rest after eating.
• Osteosarcoma: Bone cancer.

Needs & Routines

• Car: You will need a large vehicle.
• Sofa: They probably need their own sofa.
