Overview

The “Frenchie” has conquered the world to become one of the most popular breeds, especially in cities. Its compact size, low exercise needs, and comical personality make it irresistible.

Origin & History

Despite its name, its roots are in England. During the Industrial Revolution, lace workers from Nottingham moved to France taking their small bulldogs with them. There they crossed with local terriers and pugs, developing their characteristic bat ears. They quickly became favorites of Parisian society.

Temperament & Personality

They are born clowns.

  • Affection: They are “velcro dogs.” They love being on their owners’ laps.
  • Sociability: Generally get along well with other dogs and are excellent with children due to their patience.
  • Chill: They bark little, making them ideal for apartments. If they bark, it’s because something is happening.

Physical Characteristics

  • Ears: Large, upright, and broad at the base (“bat ears”).
  • Body: Small but very muscular and heavy for its size.
  • Face: Very short muzzle (brachycephalic) with wrinkles and folds.

Puppy Stage

French Bulldog Puppy

Frenchie puppies are adorable but stubborn.

  • Training: They can be headstrong. Training should be fun and reward-heavy.
  • Socialization: Exposing them to different sounds and surfaces is important to build their confidence.

Adult Stage

French Bulldog Adult

As adults, they are quite sedentary.

  • Exercise: A couple of short walks a day are enough. They are not marathon partners.
  • Play: They love short, intense bursts of play, followed by long naps on the sofa.

Health & Care

It is a breed that requires owners aware of their health issues.

  • Breathing: As brachycephalic dogs, they can have trouble breathing. Avoiding excessive heat and intense exercise is vital.
  • Spine: Can suffer from intervertebral disc disease. Prevent them from jumping off high furniture.
  • Allergies: Prone to skin and food allergies.

Needs & Routines

  • Wrinkles: Clean face folds regularly to prevent infections.
  • Climate: They are indoor dogs. They do not tolerate extreme heat or cold well.
