Summary

The Briard, or Berger de Brie, is a big-hearted French sheepdog wrapped in a long coat. Known as a “heart wrapped in fur.” It is a rustic working dog but with almost human-like sensitivity.

Origin and History

Its roots go back to medieval France. Charlemagne is said to have owned Briards. For centuries, they protected flocks from wolves and helped move livestock. In the world wars, they served as messenger dogs and search dogs for the wounded thanks to their keen hearing and bravery.

Temperament and Personality

The Briard is extremely loyal.

  • Owner’s Shadow: Will follow you everywhere.
  • Protective: Suspicious of strangers until properly introduced.
  • Elephant Memory: Never forgets a learned command… nor mistreatment.

Physical Characteristics

Large, muscular, and covered in hair.

  • Height: 23-27 inches.
  • Weight: 70-100 lbs.
  • Lifespan: 10-12 years.
  • Coat: Long, dry, and slightly wavy, with a “goat hair” texture. Needs a lot of brushing.
  • Double Dewclaws: Unique characteristic on the hind legs.

Puppy Stage

Briard Puppy

Briard puppies are adorable fur balls but very intelligent.

  • Special Needs: Intensive socialization. Their herding instinct may lead them to “herd” children by nipping at heels if not corrected.
  • Growth: Grow fast, monitor diet to prevent bone issues.

Adult Stage

Adult Briard

An adult Briard is a devoted companion.

  • Routines: Needs to be WITH the family. Not a backyard dog.
  • Activity: Loves to work, whether herding, obedience, or just long walks.

Health and Care

  • Gastric Torsion: Risk in large deep-chested breeds.
  • Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB): Genetic test available.
  • Hip Dysplasia.

Needs and Routines

  • Feeding: Super premium quality.
  • Grooming: Daily brushing or every other day to prevent mats. The hair doesn’t shed much, but it tangles.
  • Exercise: Moderate to high. Mental games are essential.
