Braque Français (Pyrénées)

Summary

The Braque Français (Pyrénées), or “Pyrenean type,” is the smaller and more popular of the two Braque Français varieties. It is prized for being a “shrink-to-fit” pointer: compact enough for the home but fast and efficient in the field.

Origin and History

Bred in the Pyrenees mountains on the French-Spanish border. While the Gascogne type maintained the original size, the Pyrenees type was developed for hunters who wanted a lighter, faster dog that could navigate rough terrain more nimbly.

Temperament and Personality

• Friendly: A very social breed that thrives on human companionship.
• Sensitive: High emotional intelligence. Does not respond well to harshness.
• Active: More energetic and faster than the Gascogne type.
• Intelligent: Known for being “born halfway trained” due to their natural instincts.

Physical Characteristics

• Size: Significantly smaller and lighter than the Gascogne.
• Coat: Short and fine. Colours are white with brown spotting or roan.
• Body: Athletic, lean, and agile.

Puppy Stage

Puppies are energetic and playful. They need plenty of socialization and positive training to build confidence.

Adult Stage

Adults are tireless hunting partners. They are great for active families who enjoy hiking or running.

Health and Care

• Issues: Generally a healthy breed. Hip dysplasia can occur but is less common than in larger breeds.
• Grooming: Very low. Occasional brushing.

Needs and Routines

• Exercise: High. They need vigorous daily exercise to burn off steam.
• Training: Gentle, reward-based training is essential.
