Summary

The Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) is a tough, hard-working herding dog designed to drive cattle across vast, rough Australian terrain. They are often called “Blue Heelers” or “Red Heelers” depending on their coat color. They are exceptionally intelligent and loyal but require a lot of activity.

Origin and History

Developed in Australia in the 1900s by crossing Dingoes with Blue Merle Collies, Dalmatians, and Kelpies. The goal was to create a dog that could herd wild cattle over long distances in heat and dust.

Temperament and Personality

  • Protective: Extremely loyal to their owners and wary of strangers.
  • Intelligent: One of the smartest breeds, needed constant mental stimulation.
  • Energetic: Endless stamina.
  • Nipper: Bred to nip at the heels of cattle, they may try to herd children or cars.

Physical Characteristics

  • Coat: Short, weather-resistant double coat.
  • Color: Blue or Red speckled/mottled. Puppies are born white.
  • Body: Compact, muscular, and powerful.
  • Ears: Broad and pricked.

Puppy Stage

Puppies are born white and develop their color after a few weeks. They are mouthy and need early bite inhibition training.

Adult Stage

Adult Australian Cattle Dog

Adults are serious workers. They bond closely with one person (often called a “Velcro dog”). They need a job, whether it’s herding, agility, or advanced obedience.

Health and Care

  • Issues: Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), hip dysplasia, and deafness.
  • Grooming: Wash-and-wear. Brush weekly.

Needs and Routines

  • Exercise: Very High. A walk is not enough; they need running or a job.
  • Training: Needs a firm, fair leader. Can be dominant if allowed.
