Summary

The Ariegeois is a medium-sized scent hound originating from southern France. A relatively young breed created for hare and boar hunting, it stands out for its elegance, lightness, and affable character, making it suitable as a family dog if its exercise needs are met.

Origin and History

Created in 1912 in the Ariège region of France. It comes from crossing the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, the Gascon Saintongeois, and local briquets (medium hounds). The goal was to obtain a dog lighter and faster than its predecessors.

Temperament and Personality

It is a pack dog par excellence.

  • Sociable: Gets along very well with other dogs.
  • Voice: Has a characteristic bark that it uses generously.
  • Character: At home, it is calm and affectionate, but in the field, it is pure passion and nose.

Physical Characteristics

Distinguished and slender.

  • Ears: Long, fine, and twisted inwards, typical of French hounds.
  • Coat: Short and fine hair. White color with black patches and sometimes ticked, with pale tan marks on the face.
  • Body: Deep but not wide chest, built for endurance.

Puppy Stage

Ariegeois Puppy

Active and scent-driven puppies.

  • Training: The hunting instinct is strong; recall training is difficult but essential.
  • Play: Scent games are ideal for mental exhaustion.

Adult Stage

Adult Ariegeois

A tireless athlete.

  • Exercise: Needs a lot of movement. Not a dog to live cooped up without activity.
  • Hunting: If used for hunting, it is methodical and collaborative.

Health and Care

Robust breed.

  • Ears: Require frequent cleaning due to their length and drop, prone to infections.
  • Stomach: As a deep-chested dog, caution with gastric torsion (bloat); avoid exercise right after eating.

Needs and Routines

  • Grooming: Occasional brushing.
  • Environment: Best in houses with a garden or countryside. In the city, requires very active owners.
