Summary
The American Hairless Terrier (AHT) is a small to medium-sized terrier that originated from the Rat Terrier. It is the only hairless breed native to the United States. They are known for being energetic, alert, and great companions for people with allergies.
Origin and History
The breed began in 1972 when a hairless puppy was born into a litter of Rat Terriers in Louisiana. The breed was developed from this single puppy and was officially recognized by the AKC in 2016.
Temperament and Personality
- Energetic: Like all terriers, they are full of energy and spunk.
- Affectionate: Bonding closely with their families.
- Alert: Excellent watchdogs but generally friendly with strangers.
- Intelligent: Highly trainable and eager to please.
Physical Characteristics
- Varieties: Comes in two varieties: Hairless and Coated.
- Skin (Hairless): Smooth and warm to the touch. Can be solid white, or white with patches of any color.

Puppy Stage

Puppies are born with a soft “down” that they lose around 8 weeks of age (for the hairless variety). They need protection from cold and sun from a young age.

Adults are active and enjoy digging and chasing. They are surprisingly robust for their size but need sweaters in winter and sunscreen in summer.

- Skin Care: Sunscreen is a must for the hairless variety. Bathing is needed to prevent acne.
- Issues: Generally healthy, but watch for patellar luxation and skin allergies.
Needs and Routines
- Exercise: Moderate. Daily walks and play.
- Protection: Needs clothes for cold weather and protection from sunburn.
