Summary

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a small-sized companion dog that was developed to resemble a miniature Husky. Despite their small size, they are energetic and intelligent dogs, not typical lap dogs. They are loyal to their families but can be reserved with strangers.

Origin and History

Developed in Wasilla, Alaska, in the 1970s by Linda Spurlin. The breed was created by mixing Alaskan Huskies with smaller breeds like the Schipperke and American Eskimo Dog to achieve a husky-like appearance in a companion size.

Temperament and Personality

They are intelligent, active, and alert.

• Loyal: They bond closely with their owners.
• Vocal: They tend to “talk” and make various noises, similar to huskies.
• Reserved: They can be skittish around strangers if not socialized.

Physical Characteristics

• Size: Comes in three sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.
• Coat: Double coat that sheds.
• Color: Black and white, gray and white, or red and white, with a distinctive facial mask.

Puppy Stage

Puppies are very active and curious. Early socialization is crucial to overcome their natural reserve. They are easy to train but can be escape artists.

Adult Stage

Adults require regular mental and physical stimulation. They are excellent agility dogs and enjoy walks and hikes, despite their size.

Health and Care

Generally healthy.

• Issues: Prone to luxating patella and thyroid issues.
