Overview
The Afghan is a dog of contrasts: a fierce hunter in the field and an aloof beauty in the show ring. It is known for its “eagle gaze” and independence, often compared to that of cats.
Origin & History
Originally from the mountains of Afghanistan, where its long coat protected it from the cold. Used to hunt leopards and gazelles by sight. It is a basal breed, predating many modern breeds.
Temperament & Personality
- Independence: Not a dog that constantly seeks to please you.
- Clown: Although they look serious, they have moments of “madness” and playfulness.
- Sensitive: Does not tolerate rough handling well.
Physical Characteristics
- Coat: Long, silky, and fine, requiring extensive maintenance.
- Tail: Ends in a characteristic ring or curve.
- Bones: Prominent hip bones are normal for the breed.
Puppy Stage

Puppies do not have long hair at birth; they have “monkey fuzz” on their faces.
- Socialization: Vital to prevent their aloof nature from becoming shyness or aggression.
- Exercise: They have high energy and need to run free in safe areas.
Adult Stage

- Grooming: Bathing and brushing are weekly commitments of several hours.
- Hunting: Their prey drive is very high; be careful with small animals.
Health & Care
- Anesthesia Sensitivity: Due to their low body fat percentage.
- Dysplasia: Hip and elbow, though less common than in other large breeds.
Needs & Routines
- Exercise: Need to sprint. A leash walk is not enough.
- Patience: Obedience training is a challenge.
